Here are the pictures I found online that I liked. I probably wouldn't do exactly the same thing for either one but something similar.

do you have the links to the pictures of the striped wall you were looking at? I am thinking vertical stripes but what to see the pics before giving my final answer.
One of my friend's husband's painted their bedroom for Christmas. He put vertical strips one one wall and he also posted before, during, and after photos on his blog. the post is "December Project" http://singingsorenson.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-01-19T17%3A22%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7
I really like the horizontal stripes in your photos, Heather. They're lighter than my friends' bedroom. I think her bedroom might be a little dark for Jehan. I'm hoping there are instructions online somewhere about how to evenly space stripes. That looks tough.
I'm a fan of stripes. It's a classic look, but you could really get into practicing counting those polka dots...
Anyhow, if you do strips, you should go to Sherwin Williams and buy their "Frog Tape" which is green and comes in a few different thicknesses. It's much better than the blue tape for preventing bleed-through. We did stripes in my kids' room that were sometimes one inch and sometimes two inches apart. The tape came in those thicknesses which saved a lot of measuring time.
Awesome, I'm doing stripes and Frog Tape it is :) Thanks! Last question though is vertical or horizontal? I'm leaning toward vertical stripes with random thickness and spacing.
I think vertical sounds good, especally if you the ceilings are a little lower than normal. Seems vertical would make the ceilings seem a little higher, and horizontal might make the ceilings seem lower.
So what is it looking like? I'll settle for more "half way" pics. :-)
